Entry into Greece & Student VISA

All students from non-European Union (non-EU) countries are required to obtain a special student entry visa — Type D Student VISA — before arriving in Greece. This requirement also applies to nationals of countries such as the USA, Canada, Australia, and Argentina, which are otherwise exempt from short-term tourist visa requirements within the Schengen Area.

The student visa is issued by the competent Greek Consular Authority or Embassy in the student’s country of residence and must be obtained prior to making any travel arrangements. Students are strongly advised to begin the application process early, as processing times vary by country.

⚠ Important
Entering Greece with a tourist visa does not permit conversion to a student residence permit while remaining in the country. Without the appropriate student VISA, a residence permit cannot be issued and the student may be required to return home to apply for the correct visa.

Travel & Mobility

International students holding a valid residence permit are entitled to travel under the conditions provided by applicable European and Greek regulations. Always carry your valid passport, residence permit, and any additional travel documentation during international travel.

✈ Home Country

With a valid residence permit, students may travel to their home country and re-enter Greece without needing to obtain a new student VISA.

🇪🇺 Schengen Area

Students may travel within the Schengen Area for short stays of up to 3 months within a 6-month period, in accordance with Schengen regulations.

🌍 Erasmus+

Students may have the opportunity to participate in Erasmus+ and other international exchange programmes, depending on programme regulations and active partnerships.

Family-Related Matters

According to the current Greek immigration framework, family reunification rights are generally not granted to international students holding a residence permit for study purposes.

Family members who wish to visit are typically required to enter Greece using a short-term tourist visa or under applicable Schengen short-stay regulations. A student residence permit does not automatically provide residence rights to family members or dependents.
